ALAMEDA CA EAST END | What is it like to live in Alameda’s East End? | East End Buyers Guide

The East End is a fantastic place to call home. This is where I live and I’m excited to share it with you.

It’s really community driven and you will get to know your neighbors, see kids playing in the street or biking to school and people coming together in the parks at all hours of the day.

The Neighborhoods

There are a number of “micro-neighborhoods” you should be aware of as they all have their own vibe. Click Here for a good visual breakdown.

Marina District: Small section along the Oakland estuary. Some of the homes have deep water docks. Its fairly isolated and very private feeling. It’s also very easy to get off the island on High St. and Fruitvale.

The Fernside: It consists of mostly larger, well built homes from the first half of the 20th century. It’s considered an “affluent corner” of Alameda because the homes typically fetch higher prices. You aren’t going to find many multi-family or cookie cutter homes here.

East End: Lots of smaller homes situated on quiet tree lined streets, Victorian to contemporary with an emphasis on the California Bungalow and craftsman

East Shore: This is another narrow and private neighborhood that borders San Leandro Bay. It’s very quiet and peaceful. The track was built in the 60’s and consists of mostly single level ranch style homes.

The Schools

Here is the school finder for Alameda the Alameda Unified School District:

East End Elementary Schools:

– Otis Elementary: This covers the south side of the East End. It is adjacent to Krusi Park.

– Edison Elementary: This covers the North Side of the East End and is located in the heart of the Fernside.

East End Middle School:

– Lincoln Middle School: Located on Fernside Blvd. adjacent to San Leandro Bay. Many of the students walk or bike to school.

East End High School:

– Alameda High: Located just on the other side of Park St, this high school serves as one of two high schools on the island and serves the much of the central and east end.

Private School Option:

– St Phillip Neri: This private school goes from Pre-K through 8th grade.

The Parks

Lincoln: Located between High St. and Fernside Blvd., this is the largest of the east end’s parks. With many amenities like a large baseball diamond/field, swimming pool, bocci ball courts, pickle ball courts, basketball court and hand ball court, this place has it all! It is truly a community meeting spot for sports lovers, dog walkers and families alike!

Krusi: Located near the bridge to Bay Farm and adjacent to Otis Elementary, this park has four baseball diamonds and several tennis courts as well as a picnic area and play structure. Many organized and pick up sporting events take place here.

Jackson: This is the smallest of the three parks. Located just a block off of Park St., it’s essentially a large median of Park Ave. Perfect for dog walking or outdoor picnics, this space is truly a breath of fresh air so close to the busy shopping district of Park St.

Shopping

South Shore Plaza: This is the largest shopping plaza on the east side of the island. Sporting a large Safeway and Trader Joe’s, many of the towns population come here to shop. Though, groceries are not the only thing you can find here. They have many restaurants, shops, a post office, car wash and more. You can even charge your Tesla at the super charging station!

Nob Hill: This is a small complex where the Nob Hill grocery store is the main attraction. Though a gas station and several other useful shops are located here as well.

Encinal Market: This is your local corner market. They have a butcher that rivals any in Alameda and a beer/wine selection that will surprise you. Perfect for those last minute items, you will find yourself here often. The other benefit, is you can easily walk/bike. Not to mention that Feel Good Bakery has one of it’s two island locations just across the parking lot.
